Naples Holiday It has to be said that one of the most popular reasons for a Naples Holiday has to be the abundance of cuisine here, influenced by the many cultures that have touched these shores over the centuries, with Pizza winning precedence as perhaps the most famous. Traditionally, Rome and Naples have always been vying over which is the best version (the Pizza in Naples is with a doughy base, whereas the Roman version is usually very thin and crispy). As you wander around the streets on your Naples Holiday, you may observe that many of the restaurants have “la vera pizza napolitana” sign hanging outside indicating they serve the ‘real’ Neapolitan Pizza. Don’t dismiss these signs, they do indicate a level obtained by the restaurant, as in order to display this sign they must use specific ingredients and cook the pizza in a wood-fired oven at a certain temperature. |

Other culinary delights not to be missed are Calzone (a type of folded pizza with a filling inside), Misto di Frittura (deep-fried vegetables in bread crumbs) as well as seafood such as mussels and clams although it is unadvisable to eat uncooked shellfish as the coast is polluted.
Around Spaccanapoli and Stazione Centrale (Central station) there are many Pizzerias and seafood restaurants. In Santa Lucia, near the marina, there are many restaurants with a nice view, while in the centre you will find a mix as well as cafés and Bars. After sampling the vast choice of cuisine, shopping may be a nice diversion for the afternoon. Naples has a wide range of shopping choices from designer shops to market markets and craft stores. Gold is especially prevalent, with many gold and jewellery shops located around Via San Biagio dei Librai. There are a lot of craftsman and artisan shops around Quartieri Spagnoli and Sapaccanapoli. The more exclusive designer boutiques are along Via Chiaia to Piazza dei Martini down to the wharf, while younger people shop around Via Roma and Via Toledo. A Naples Holiday has much to offer in the evening and a trip to magnificent Teatro San Carlo, situated in the elegant Piazza Trento e Trieste, is a must if only to see its sumptuous interior and if fortune shines, to hear its renowned acoustics. Tickets are notoriously difficult as they are sold on a seasonal basis. Contact the local Tourist Information Office for further details.
The listings can be found in the magazine Qui Napoli and local newspapers. Tickets for both sporting and cultural events can be purchased at the Box Office. Jazz bars and clubs are popular for the younger crowd, with the area around Piazza de Gesù Nuovo and Piazza San Domenico Maggiore popular in the city centre. Via Cisterna dell’Olio has great clubs for those with the stamina to go well into the early hours. In the summer, everyone heads out of the city centre to the waterfront to enjoy the bars and clubs which line the beaches. Although most places are safe during the day, the Stazione Centrale, Piazza Dante, Via Toledo and Piazza Carità should be avoided after dark, and certainly if alone. Picket-pockets are rife so be wary when in a crowd. Useful Information and Websites: Teatro San Carlo
